At Moma

On a damp and gray January afternoon I met Robo at MOMA on 53rd and 5th. It was my first visit to the newly-designed space since its renovation a few years ago. Free passes came my way from a good neighbor.

The new museum is magnificent. The collection includes 150,000 paintings, sculptures, drawings, prints, photographs, architectural models and drawings, and design objects. Among my favorites in photography were several works by Atget, Stieglitz, Brandt, and Lange.

Rob and I have similar American-Italian backgrounds which have evolved into different adult lives and often very opposite views politically and on social issues. Yet, he’s a friend with whom I have the best discussions on all these topics, especially when mixing in religion, philosophy, and the arts. It proves that good dialog isn’t about caring who’s right or who has a better position, but how two people listen, and bring an awareness of prior conversations with them. As with all my good friends, that dialog only works when we lay it all out, interested to hear each other’s progress and struggles.
