Ellen Ruden, a waitress at Fanelli’s on Prince Street organized a benefit art show for St. Bernard Parish in New Orleans through an organization called Habitat For Humanity. Ellen featured about twenty of her black and white photos shot in late 2007 which depict some of the wreckage from Katrina. She solicited several other artists to contribute pieces for a silent auction. Two short video programs about the devastation to St. Bernard were projected in the space. Volunteers cooked up some homemade Louisiana food and Fanelli’s owner Sacha Noe supplied the upstairs gallery space and spirits.
Shirin Neshat, the Iranian photographer and filmmaker donated two 8×10 color prints for the cause.
The piece I contributed, “Silver Lake Moon” fetched a whopping dollar amount (I jest) at the very end of the night.
