Farmani Factor

A photo colleague told me about a competition via px3.fr back in October 2007. I sent in five images, forgot about it, and expected nothing. But four months later when I got a “you have been selected” email, I wasn’t certain of its legitamacy. But it was, and Hossein Farmani had indeed curated twenty-seven photographs from hundreds of entrants to put together a series called the Human Condition for an exhibition at his gallery in Los Angeles. Hossein is a true advocate of exposing lesser-known photographers. His support of the art form has manifested itself in the Lucie Awards, the Oscar-equivalent ceremony for photography, now in its fifth year.

The Human Condition show will travel to Paris in late June and then to a gallery in Dumbo, Brooklyn this fall. The show in Los Angeles runs from March 6 till the end of the month.

On a muggy August night aboard the Staten Island Ferry, a man sitting alone begins to howl and shriek incessantly. He doesn’t leave his seat. He attracts the attention of passersby around him. People glance over, annoyed, and begin to move away. The police approach, calm the man down and threaten arrest. Repentant, the howling man gains composure and is left with a souvenir…a summons to appear in court.
